Line work/"second session" tattoo question?

du

So ive done a decent ammount of research on tattoos and I'm ready but i have a individualized question.

I'm getting a big piece done sometime soon and I really dont know if I can sit for the whole time. SO I was wondering if the artist does the line work first then the shading down the road, how does the total get broken up and does it cost more for a second session on the same piece?

I assume itd cost a little more just because you hsve to pay for more needles/equipment -but other than that does it change the over all price of the tattoo?

Also would the artist make you ONLY pay for what youve had done or would they let you pay for the whole thing up front and just come back for the shading??

I also am aware of the fact that this can vary from artist to artist but what has your experince been with this?
