Buy new gifts or not?

So, our toddler, almost 3 years old, found his christmas gifts today and opened them. He was very happy of course. My dear SO, his dad, was in the same room and didn't notice 🙄 So now we're discussing what to do. He has two unopened gifts left and I think that's enough anyway, but my SO thinks we should buy him a few more because "he shouldn't get punished because I (dad) didn't pay attention". I don't think we "punish" him by not giving him extra gifts. He doesn't really understand anyway. What do you think?

it's not punishing him. he's 3. he'll be fine with two surprises. the other gifts are still new and will be considered as such.

He’s not being “punished” he just got most of his gifts early. 
He definitely shouldn’t be rewarded with more gifts because of this incident. That’ll just reinforce that if he opens his gifts early he’ll get more gifts.

My daughter did the same thing when her gifts came in the mail. Her 3rd bday is on the 22nd of December so we decided to let her have them as now gifts and save the others for bday and Christmas.

He's three. He doesn't know where the gifts come from. I bet other people will give him stuff as well. He'll be fine.
