New Year's Eve plans

My husband and I decided to go out on New Year's eve and go to a nice restaurant. I asked him if jeans we're okay it if I should squeeze into this formal dress I have that a wore a few weeks ago (even though I'm worried it won't fit soon). He says that we don't need to go that formal but that something nicer than jeans would be good. Its like we were having different conversations because I was trying to list for him the only options I currently have in my wardrobe. The conclusion was that I'll probably have to go buy something. Its not the end of the world, just money I didn't want to spend on an outfit I'll probably only wear twice. Makes me want to stay home instead.
