Throwing your own baby Shower?

So I have a question. My fiancé and I are expecting our first baby together. A little boy, we have thrown out the idea that we want a baby shower. I’m just shy of 32 weeks and my family has offered to help with the shower. His family has not. They don’t even talk about it until recently his mom asked when my shower was going to be? She said bc she has a lot of people that she wants to invite. Am I wrong for expecting that they help or throw us a shower? Isn’t it customary for a shower to be thrown for the mom to be vs throwing your own? Thoughts on this?

It’s rude to throw your own shower. 
But it’s customary for the mother’s family to throw the shower. The father’s family usually does not. They’re definitely not obligated to.

Nothing is customary any more. Not with our society where everyone just looks out for themselves. 
Throw your own show, if you family helps that's great. But dont count on people to do things that were societal norm back in the 60s or whatever

If she’s specifically wanting to invite people or family you and your husband weren’t going to or don’t know well then she should help plan and play for food. You or your family shouldn’t have to pay for the extra X number of people you didn’t want there to begin with, so that becomes your MIL’s responsibility. If these are people you’d invited if you planned it yourself then no she’s not obligated to help.

If your MIL wants to invite people to your shower that your mom is throwing with you, she should contribute in some way in my opinion. It is rude to just invite a ton of people and not help. 
All those extra people might force you to change venues-extra cost! All those extra people require more food-extra cost! She needs to chip in.

My sister is planning mine. We don't even have a theme or time set. But we are doing late March so I'll be 30w then. I want time to enjoy the end of my pregnancy and go through everything we got before our son comes.
If she isn't throwing one or helping then she shouldn't invite anyone. We are inviting my fiancés family but as also talked to his mom about doing a dinner with his grandma and aunt because I don't want them at my shower. His family is really needy and play the victim.
If she doesn't plan on helping she shouldn't invite anyone. Thats how I see it.🤷🏻‍♀️

Both moms are throwing one in my case. I don't think I would have thrown my own, but I see nothing wrong with doing it.
I guess in a way I'm more involved than I want with the one my mom is throwing because I have a say in decoration and even made my the invitations lol.
I don't think it's rude to throw your own baby shower, but I think it's rude af for your mother-in-law to invite so many people without even offering to help at all. I wouldn't invite them especially if you're in a tight budget.

I threw my own shower. People asked my mom and husband why they weren’t planning it and they said because she is pregnant and insisted on throwing it herself. 😂 I loved every second of it and it came out exactly as I had envisioned! However, I got to invite who I wanted. If she is saying she wants to invite all these people then she should be helping to plan/pay for it.

Yes but it’s the mom’s family that usually throws it. My stepmom did mine.
