Baby wants to sit, is it safe?

My 5 month old is always wanting to sit up since she was a month old. But I started letting her sit with support for a few minutes at a time only after she turned 4 months. Now that she's 5 months old, for how long can she be made to safely sit supported in my lap at a single stretch? I've been told by visiting aunts that it's bad for her spine if its for more than 2-3 minutes at a time. Any truth in that?

Let her sit up as long as she wants
 Your aunts are full of crap. Its not bad for her at this age. If she wants to sit up let her do it as long as she wants. She needs to be doing it anyway

I've never heard that. Mine is 5 months and can sit on her own because we've been having her practice sitting ever since she showed interest. Their bodies know when they're ready for things. Just like my baby wants to stand now, so I let her stand (supported of course). I wouldn't hinder their development if they are showing interest unless my doctor said otherwise. You could always call the pediatrician if you're concerned tho.

Each baby progresses at different rates. It’s perfectly fine for your baby to sit up with assistance for however long they can. Make it like tummy time. You designate periods of time each day for tummy time, so why wouldn’t it be okay to designate time for baby to practice sitting up on their own. It gives upper body strength and preps them for stand and walking. I was sitting up by myself by 7 months, 9 months I could hold myself up standing if I could hold on to a table or something else, and then by 11 months I was walking.
