Disciplining a 1 year old

My 18 month old has the worst temper already, for example the other day he was playing with his food so I assumed he was done, so I went to take the plate away from him & he scratched my face & my neck so bad it left marks. He does this EVERY TIME he gets upset. Nobody in my home is violent so its not like hes copying other people's behavior. I try my best to redirect him in a way he'd understand that it's not okay but he keeps doing it. Any tips on what to do?
