We have to rehome one of our dogs
Looking for opinions on where to turn to. We moved 9 hours away from family and friends and don’t have anyone to help us look.
We have an elderly female dog and a 5-6 year old male blue heeler mix. Both of these dogs came into the relationship with my husband and he pretty much just found both of them on the side of the road. He’s had the elderly dog for at least 8 years and she has been socialized much more than the male. He has pretty much only been around my husband and his other dog since.
He is a very anxious dog and cannot be trusted alone with the female as loud noises tend to set him off and he’s attacked her a few times during a thunderstorm or such when we’ve been away from the house. So, we have to keep them very much separated any time we aren’t actively watching—I.e. during the night, when we’re gone, etc.
I say this to preface the fact that we are expecting twins in 8-10 weeks and this dog is NOT good with babies. My infant nephew visited a few months ago and the dog was very skittish and nippy with him so we immediately again had to put him away. It’s obvious he is not going to work out with two newborns around and only me to watch him around them and our other dog. It’s not fair for him either to be in a constant anxious state and separated away from the family.
He’s a great person dog. Like if he just had one master and could just follow them around all day, he would be great! He ultimately is just a lazy inside dog who happens to be very anxious around crawling kids and other animals.
I DO NOT want him to have to go to a shelter. I am not attached to this dog in any way—he has pissed all over the room we are making into our nursery marking his territory and I just overall lost all trust in him around other dogs and infants—but my husband cares deeply for him and I need to find him a good home.
That’s a long-winded way of asking for suggestions on who I could reach out to for help.
