Here is our unexpected birth story:
Jan 29 I decided to take a late shower, it was almost 11 pm. That's when I started to notice some contractions starting. I finished my shower and even touched up my legs in case it was go time. After, I sat in the living room with my husband as he played 2k and I timed my contractions. After an hour they were about 3-5 min apart so we got our two boys ready (6 and 2) grabbed our bags and were on our way to the hospital. We live in military housing in Hawaii, about 30 min from the hospital. I was glad we were driving at night because that meant no traffic, something I worried about because it can get pretty bad.
On our way I noticed my contractions were getting further apart. We checked in to labor and delivery and they took me into triage where they monitored baby and me. They checked my cervix and I was only at 3 cm dilated so they would check again in an hour or two. We waited. My contractions were coming in randomly, like 6, 10 or 12 minutes apart. When it came time to check me again, sadly I was still only at 3 cm. They gave me the option to walk around and they would check me in another 3 hours or to go home and return when I progressed more. I was worried about leaving because with my past deliveries I started out slow and after a point progressed super fast. But it seemed like my contractions were getting further apart and my kids looked tired so we decided to go home. Maybe it was a false alarm.
We made it home by 5 am and all went straight to bed. I could barely sleep, dosing in and out between contractions. They were still at 10 min apart though but they felt more intense. This lasted for hours. It was around 10:30 when I decided to go downstairs because I was hungry. My husband and kids were still sleeping. I made myself a bowl of cereal and noticed my contractions changing to 8 and then 6 minutes apart. I couldn't finish my cereal, the pain was getting worse and I knew it was getting close. I carefully went up the stairs and barely made it to the top when I started getting another contractions. I stopped and yelled at my husband from the door to wake up because we had to go NOW. He quickly jumped up and woke up the kids. They were all running around looking for their shoes as I was trying to breath through my contractions which felt much closer. It had only been two minutes since I woke my husband and I could tell we were really running out of time. I stood next to our bed as another contraction started, I felt the need to push so I yelled out to him that this was it. Baby was coming and he was gonna have to catch her. He ran over from the bathroom, with his tooth brush still in his mouth as I pulled down my leggings. My water then broke and I definitely felt the baby's head coming out, then without even needing to push, she came out and my husband was there to catch her. He carefully untangled the cord from her neck and passed her to me as I sat on the floor. We made sure she cried and called 911, through the phone they instructed us what to do while we waited for the ambulance. From there we were transported to the hospital and both baby and I were checked and looking healthy.
