Cervical check question...if you are a nurse, then your perspective is appreciated.

Lisa

So, I had my first two cervical checks at 32 weeks because I had a preterm scare/was admitted to the hospital 3 full days. The nurse seemed to lunge in to my body as hard as she could and hook my cervix with her finger the first time. The second time, same nurse, she was slightly more gentle because she knew my body more, but still really rough.

This experience...severe pain, cramping, contracting, bleeding, etc...made me terrified of having it done again at my 37 week appointment. At this appointment my doctor did it. She went in very slowly, guided her finger, and let me know when she would be pushing. She also let me know when it was going to hurt, and said, "Sorry, I know it's not fun". I also only bled for a few hours over all. I only had about 5 contractions, some cramping and sore the next day.

So, my question is....why was there such a difference? Why are some people very rough and others gentle, but the same job gets done?
