⚠️ TRIGGER WARNING ⚠️ Should victims of sexual assault be informed, if they had no memory of it and were unaware?

B

I was speaking to my sister yesterday as she lives in Manchester - home to the prolific sex offer Reynhard Sinaga.

For those of you who aren’t aware, he’s thought to be Britain’s (and possibly the worlds) most prolific serial rapist. He lured into the hundreds of men (who had usually been drinking) back to his flat, with the offer of help - usually to wait for a taxi or friends etc. While the men were there, he gave them a spiked drink and filmed his sexual assaults on them.

When the men awoke in the morning he’d paint himself as a ‘good samaritan’. For example, he told one man that he found him drunken in the streets and offered them a place to crash. Most of the men didn’t think much more of the encounter and usually thanked him for his kindness.

Since the footage and ‘trophies’ Sinaga took were found by the police they of course identified the men involved and informed them of what had happened.

Understandably these men have since needed to be offered counselling for their ordeal and it’s reported that some have had suicidal thoughts.

On the phone conversation with my sister she questioned if it were her, if she’d even like to know. It got me thinking about how I’d feel in the scenario (I can’t possibly imagine and it’s difficult to say without having been through it myself) and wondered about the perspectives of others too. Most men had absolutely no memory of the assault so in this case, I’d ignorance truly bliss?
