Medically managed miscarriage
I just need to tell my story (with graphic bits) of my missed miscarriage at 8 weeks discovered at 12.
I chose to go for a medically managed miscarriage and went into hospital this morning to insert my own pessaries to kick start things. I wasn’t worried (was even quite chirpy) but I had no idea what to expect as there isn’t much detail available online and the hospital were obviously trying to not panic me. Even inserting the pessaries was a surprise - my vagina swelled up and essentially closed as soon as I put the first tablet in and I wasn’t ready for that... I had 4 to go in! Was monitored at hospital for a couple of hours then went home. It hit me like a sledgehammer. Suddenly I was on the loo with diarrhoea and contractions started at irregular intervals. Mild at first but rapidly escalating and it was only about 45 mins before the pain got so bad that I started vomiting. Cut to 4 blurry hours later and my saintly husband has been wiping my bum because I can’t move, changing my vom bucket several times (I took some painkillers but couldn’t keep them down) and stroking my hair as I cry out with each contraction. Now I know induced childbirth is terrible but I wasn’t ready for the level of pain involved and it eventually got to the point where there were no gaps between contractions for about an hour and I started convulsing in pain. Husband calls ambulance and suddenly pain stops from one minute to the next. So weird to go from literally thinking I’m going to die to feeling totally fine.
If you’re wondering which option to take, I would say don’t be afraid of surgery, I hugely regretted my course of action. It’s different for everyone (and I think some hospitals will keep you in while it happens) but it was the worst 5 hours of my life and it felt like it was for nothing. Onwards and upwards!
