At what age did your child master the proper pencil grip?

Any tips on how to teach/encourage the proper grip? My 3.5 year old is having some trouble learning how to hold her pencil properly. We show her, but she always goes back to holding it the improper way.

Towards the end of kindergarten he got it down. But now at age 9 he holds it a different way. His writing is neat so his teacher doesn’t care.

I just had conferences with my 4yo's Pre-K teachers and they said he had a dynamic tripod grip, which usually develops between the ages of 5-7. I don't know when it happened and I never taught it to him. There are 4 types of mature grips, so don't try to force one type, especially before they developmentally ready. Hand bones of a 3yo differ from a 5yo and don't complete til around 15-16yo.

My son had some issues like that. We eventually room him to occupational therapy to strengthen his motor skills. That was around age 4, he was still gripping pencils like a 12-18 month old. 
Not being able to button buttons or zip his zipper well. 
He did great in therapy and now is a perfectly normal 10 year old!

Right before they started preschool, so right around 3 for both.  They were always avid little artists though so a majority of their wake time was spent drawing (still is!). I wouldn’t worry about teaching the grip until they start school.  I never “taught” them, it just came naturally from me drawing with them.
