What did you buy used??

Question

We just found out we’re pregnant with our first! We don’t have a lot of money saved up. Nor do we make extra each month. Both sets of parents are willing to help out-money wise. But what did you buy used??
I’d buy everything used if I could verify recalls/accident free car seats. But I know it’s recommended to buy some stuff new. Thoughts??

I had to add a link to comment, so I’m linking this very affordable crib from Ikea. 
Items you really should get new:
- Car Seat
- Crib*
- Crib Mattress 
- Pacifiers
- Bottles/Nipples
- Breast Pump (insurance should cover this)
*a gently used crib from someone you trust would be ok as long as you check for recalls and make sure there are now missing or damaged parts. The mattress should still be new though.

Pretty much everything else you can get used, just make sure you check for recalls, make sure there are no damaged or missing parts, and wash/clean everything really well.

Why you shouldn't buy a used car seat!
I never like these recommendations posts that make me find a link first. Dumb. Anyway. Never buy a car seat used. It is more than just accidents you have to worry about. It’s how it was washed and treated. It could have been stored badly and molded. You never know. 
Buy anything used but the car seat. Clothes are the biggest cost, so start there. I’ve always done consignment and such for my kids clothes. Hand me downs are awesome too. Even a crib with a good mattress is ok used. Just never a car seat.

I just linked this since I had to find something. But we received almost everything used from family. Most of her clothing was bought used from Once Upon a Child, her crib was a hand me down from a cousin, her bedroom furniture (glider, dresser, changing table) were hand me downs, her stroller was a hand me down, but we did buy her car seat new. We also got her new bottles and I got a new breast pump, but insurance covers that. We bought a used swing, but our LO hates it so we’ll be buying a different one new this time since we haven’t been able to find any good ones used.  Babies outgrow everything so quickly that I can’t fathom buying everything, especially clothing, brand new. Our daughter never even got to wear most of her newborn clothes.

Crib mattress and car seat are two things I feel there are legitimate research to support safety standards being potentially compromised with wear and tear, and I wouldn’t feel comfortable without having purchased those things new myself.  That said, I have used both of those products for subsequent children, but at least then I knew exactly where they had been and how they had been treated!  One additional thing- I really wish I’d skipped the fancy highchair we got and just got the basic IKEA one.  From everything I hear it works great and is easy to clean.

Check out this store if there’s one in your area. I try to buy most things  second hand. Babies grow so fast. But I wouldn’t buy a car seat second hand. I would invest in a good car seat/ stroller combo. You aren’t suppose to use a used mattress for a newborn either. Other then those two things, I would buy everything second hand.
