Thrush??

My twins are 5 weeks old today. I have been breastfeeding them since birth and my nipples still hurt. Sometimes to the point that it’s unbearable for the first 10 seconds. I’m thinking my son may have a bad latch, but I did some research on thrush and I’m wondering if maybe that’s the issue. I read that babies will get white patches on their tongues. Is that what he has on his tongue? It’s very faint. I can’t tell if my daughters tongue has it.

It is sometimes difficult to tell thrush from breast milk on the tongue.  The general rule is that if you can scrape it off the tongue (like with a spoon), it’s probably breast milk.  If you see white patches on the gums, cheeks, or roof of the mouth, it’s definitely thrush, but these don’t have to be there for it to be thrush.
However, it sounds like you’re having other possible symptoms of thrush, so it may be worth a check at the pediatrician.  Especially since you would need to treat your nipples too and it may be putting the other twin at risk.
