When to tell firstborn he will be a big brother?

My son is 9 years old and I found out on Friday that I'm pregnant. I'm curious to know when others broke the news to their children and how they did it. And how...creative, funny, memorable?

Haha! Dummy me left the digital test on the bathroom counter. Went and got our 6 year old daughter up for school and she went in to use the bathroom. She read the test and said hey mom your pregnant!

We're waiting until we hear or see a heartbeat. I'm giving my son a shirt that says "Big Brother" all wrapped up. He is 8 and super sensitive so we can't tell him until we are absolutely sure everything is okay. He is going to be soooo excited!

Waiting for a while here. My daughter (10) wants a baby sister sooooo bad (she has 4 brothers) and I think she would be devastated if I had a miscarriage. I know there aren't any gaurantees even once past first trimester, but the odds are better.

My son is 11. I ordered him a t-shirt online that said, "Keep Calm. I'm being promoted to big brother." It took a few days to come. It took him a second to get it, but he was happy once he did. He was like, "oh, so that's why you've been sick...that's why you had to go to the doctor...that's why you've been complaining about your clothes shrinking! I should have known!" I didn't know he had noticed all that lol. Anyway, that was right at 5 weeks. We didn't want to hold out on him, but we told him not to tell anyone else.

I told my 5 year old the day after I found out . We went and saw the heart beat together and loved our lil peanut tons ! She really loved that baby . When we found out our baby passed away at 9 weeks 3 days she was devastated . She cried for days and still months later draws pictures of herself holding her baby . She made me promise that I'll not tell her until I know the baby will be ok if I got pregnant again . This time I'm not telling her . I wouldn't want to put her through it again . BUT you are completely different and should follow your heart . If you think he would handle a loss well or not be affected badly then share away ! He is your child you know him best :)

I personally would wait until the end of the first trimester.  My kids are 7 and 5 - if my current pregnancy works out (I had two miscarriages earlier this year… So I've been a bit freaked out and just praying all goes smoothly) then I will likely wait until 13 weeks or so.

We told our son who was 3 at the time we having twins. Right as his birthday approached (Aug 14) we lost them at 8 weeks. I can say, explaining that to a child is extremely difficult. We aren't telling him until we are out of the 1st trimester

My son is younger but we are waiting. We had a miscarriage in June (we found out at 16 weeks) and he knew and I swear one of the hardest things about it was telling him. He'd been so excited. I'm not sure how long we will wait. Probably till after 12 weeks. That will be right at Christmas so I thought of doing something for him for Christmas. We will see.

I'm actually wondering the same for my 10 year old girl. She has wanted a sibling sooo long! I want to wait until the u/s because the doc is worried it might be ectopic. I don't want to get her hopes up again if it won't be able to stay.
