Varicole

How did your dr diagnose your husband with a varicocele vein? Was there a specific test run to diagnose this?

He had an analysis and physical but you could see it right away. They did an ultrasound to confirm. He had surgery 5 weeks later and first month trying after we fell pregnant. I’m currently almost 12 weeks

First my husbands sperm analysis came back low count. Then he was referred to a urologist who noted his fsh was high and did a physical exam and ordered an ultrasound. Then he was diagnosed. Surgery was offered, we declined. He was prescribed clomid which I had seen on this app. And then we went directly to ivf. We declined surgery because it takes 3 months to see if the surgery worked. Our insurance covered ivf so we didn’t want to wait on a maybe

The first urologist we saw did a physical exam and noted a low grade varicocele but didn’t think it was considerable enough to operate on. The second urologist we saw after our 3rd miscarriage also did a physical exam and noted the same low grade varicocele. Due to our history, the second urologist ordered an ultrasound of the varicocele to better determine size and severity. The ultrasound confirmed that it was a low to moderate grade varicocele. Since we had been TTC for 3.5 years and had 3 consecutive miscarriages they decided to do an embolisation of the affected veins this January. We will have a follow up appointment at the end of April. Wishing you the best, and just reminding you to keep advocating for yourself, asking questions, and getting more opinions.

That’s how it worked out in our case. I personally would ask more questions about why they “think” that, if I were you. Like was the physical exam normal and they didn’t detect any varicoceles. Or was it inconclusive because they weren’t sure if they found any problems or not. For our situation, it was worth doing to the procedure to have the embolisation (even though the varicocele present wasn’t that extreme) because we were out of options to improve sperm quality & quantity. Regardless, I hope you guys get some answers!

Hope it all works out for you guys!! The reason I asked this question is because my husband has had a physical exam, and we are told they don’t “think” a varicocele vein is an issue, but in my mind I was wondering if an ultrasound might pick up an issue better. Sounds like what happens with the physical determine if they move to an ultrasound.
