What can be done to boost voter turn-out?

jasmine

Info from BBC: As you may know, young people were sorely lacking from the democratic primary votes. 1/3 of eligible voters in America are younger than 39, and they largely favor sanders. However, only 5-19% of youths aged 18-29 voted in the primaries on super tuesday.

While many have blamed this on voter suppression, there’s just no way 80% of millenials/genX attempted to vote and were denied in some way.

With all of this said: how can we incentivize voting for both the youth and general population?

Online voting is the only thing I can think of that might work. But it’s way to difficult to secure just yet.

That would be so convenient.

It will be doable at some point in the future.

That could definitely work! But you’re right, I’m not sure it would ever be secure

Start with having decent choices to vote for. I dont like any of the major candidates (and lord knows a third party candidate wont win), I went and voted strictly to vote AGAINST Bloomberg. If he hadnt run, I wouldnt have even done it.

Same. I’m not too fond of any of the choices.

Open the primaries. I had to change my part affiliation so that I can vote in the primaries in my state.

Yeah I get that’s a concern but it’s really alienating to anyone who doesn’t fit into the dems or the republicans. I think there are so many people tired of the bipartisan and this only enforced it and makes them resentful

Some states do have open primaries. The only problem is sometimes sabotage happens.

During the 2016 election, I couldn’t get off work to vote. They’re SUPPOSED to let you off work to vote, right? Yeah okay...I wish! By the time I got off work, the lines were so damn long. Indiana doesn’t vote in the primaries. I plan to vote in November, even when I have to pack my 2 under 2 up and go. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Put the polling places in a target or mall lol. But in all seriousness, I have no idea. I can’t imagine just not voting. I see it as something everyone should go.

We need online voting. So many more people would vote I feel. Especially the younger generations.

We definitely need it but online voting isn’t secure, look how easy it was for Russia to interfere in our elections before...

I’m 28, I voted for the first time in my life for Bernie of course on Super Tuesday. There was absolutely nobody my age waiting in line to vote. It was all people that are 50+. With the amount of support I see for Bernie Sanders he should of been in the lead by a mile and yet Biden took some states... and that’s because we have all these young people saying they support Bernie but none of them turned up to actually vote. I don’t know what can be done to show them they need to vote because obviously seeing the idiot we have in office now isn’t push enough to go out and vote 🤷🏻‍♀️

I find that there is very little understanding of the primaries and what role it plays... I always vote in them, but I don’t think many people choose to show an interest until the candidate is decided... at which time they complain because the one they wanted didn’t get it 🤷🏼‍♀️ I also think there is a good chunk of young people that haven’t really existed in the ‘real world’ yet.. this isn’t an insult, it is just that every generation seems to find ways to put off adulting for as long as they can.. when you live with parents or at college and your world appears to be the same as everyone else you know, you don’t really understand reality the same way as someone paying property taxes, shopping for insurance, and raising kids who would benefit from school choice.
