Pap smear??

Question

My doctor wants me to have another Pap smear since finding out I'm pregnant. 
Is that normal? 
I know it sounds stupid... But wouldn't opening my cervix and scraping for a sample possibly cause damage to the baby in attempting to grow or am I freaking out for nothing and it is actually normal?

I actually disagree,  I feel like if you had a pap already this year then you shouldn't need a second pap. I was pregnant and due this December. I miscarried at 4 months. I will not allow my doctor to do a second pap on me if they ask I will kindly decline. Just my thoughts good luck to you! 💓

In Aus it's not standard to have one with every pregnancy. And your also only required to have a pap swear every 2 years unless over a certain age or it comes back irregular. My doctor said to wait until when baby had arrived to get one done. She said she doesn't like doing to in early pregnancy. I'm only 26 so maybe that's why she wasn't too worried about doing it. I'll be due for one half way through my pregnancy but I'll wait until bubba is born to get it done. I guess if your not comfortable getting it done (as safe as it may be) then don't get it done. They can't force you.

My OB had the pap smear brush on her tray but decided against it.  All my paps are normal and I just had one a year ago.

A papsmear doesn't dilate the cervix at all as long as it's an ecto which is just the vaginal canal.  Most papsmears are endo/ecto which means they do an outside swab as well as one in the cervix.

An OB knows what they are doing - I had paps done with my first pregnancy and even a colposcopy which is taking samples of my cervix due to hpv.  There is nothing to worry about.

And just so you know I have worked as a medical assistant/office manager for the past 8 years at a GYN office and have just recently switched to PCP.

Any time someone puts something up in there... Is a chance for infection.  I would say....Not necessary! You can do one in 9 months.

In Aus we are told to have one only every 2 years and I had one in March 2014 so not due yet. I've just heard so many stories of people miscarrying after one and it's got me so nervous...

My doctor did a Pap smear at my first visit. It's completely normal! They just want to monitor the health of the cervix. Have no fear!

Yes it's standard to do that on one of the first prenatal visits. I had one last pregnancy and will have another this time too.
