Trigger Warning: suicide
So a little back story....
My family are going through a hard time at the moment health wise and my parents were talking to me and were like “you’re young and healthy now, you should get the life insurance we have, it won’t be as expensive for you”....
Now the life insurance they have covers two things 1. Your life. So if you die your next to kin gets payment. And 2. Major illness ONCE off pay out. So if I get a tumor (benign or otherwise) or broken bones or anything that’s expensive then they will give me one massive payout (around 200,000-300,000 depending) to cover costs. It’s a high amount for the reason that some illnesses require you to go back for scans and such and it’s to cover future costs of that too.
So we were discussing this and my mum laughed and was like if you die we get the money because you have no kids and aren’t married.
I joked and was like ok but like don’t kill me.
She said no if we killed you or you killed yourself we get nothing...nothing.
Now I get the not getting anything for killing me. Like I’m happy about that but it got me thinking that if I had major mental illness and killed myself or they did (cause they have this insurance too) family members get nothing. Now my mum said it’s because some people would do it to get family members out of debt. But I still feel it’s treating mental illness as irrelevant or unfairly in some way. It basically doesn’t sit right with me. Especially since this person is paying money into it so their family will be covered and if they do have mental illness and something happens that’s not even there for them with funeral costs or anything. So it got me thinking should suicide be paid out or are the insurance company right?
