Will sleep training end night feedings?

My almost 5 month old still wakes up to eat every 3 hours. If I let him cry it out, won’t he just be hungry? I’m just so tired

I don’t think they need to eat every three hours at this age overnight but they certainly shouldn’t be denied food. I do know that by six months babies are physically and neurologically go 12 hours without food and by 3-4 months they should be able to go 6-7 hours without food overnight. My daughter only wakes once a night (she goes 8-10 hours straight then feeds and goes back down for another 2-4 hours) and I do feed her then. Sleep training helped us get out of the multiple wakings a night during the four month regression. Babies wake up several times a night naturally and it’s important they have the tools to put themselves back to sleep. My guess is that your baby isn’t hungry but is having difficulty putting themselves back to sleep.

Nope most likely not.    My oldest woke up at night until he was almost a year old.    Waking up that often is normal.  Not every baby does but it is still in the normal range

Night feedings are the last part of weaning, not the first

If you let him cry a little he will fall back asleep most likely. If you start cutting night feedings then he will eat more during the day and not be as hungry at night. You could start making smaller bottles at night to ease him into it. Our guy typically eats 6oz bottles throughout the day. Before bed he will eat 8-12oz in the last hr before he falls asleep. Sometimes he sleeps all night (9-10hrs ish) and sometimes he will get up once and eat 6oz. There are also times he’s in a growth spurt and will wake up to eat more, but it’s usually just a few nights.

Most babes stop requiring night feedings around 6 months and after that is becomes more of a sleeping crutch. Talk to your Dr and see what they say based on your little weight (if they can cut the night feed)

Yes he will still be hungry, babies need something when they cry. 3 hour stretches of sleep are normal at this age. Sleeping through the night isn't as common even though a lot of moms on this board have babies that do that (and sleeping through the night is actually 5 hours of consecutive sleep so your baby is almost there). If you're EBF your baby will night wean around a year old. You can try to rock or soothe baby for a few minutes when they wake but if it doesn't work baby needs food. I'm firmly opposed to sleep training though so I'm bias against it.

Somebody else said it that sleeping through the night isn’t as common as it seems and I agree! Every baby is different. My first did not sleep well until I completely weaned him at 2 and my 5 month old sleeps like a champ with 5-8 hour stretches at night. I’ve read that sometimes to get them to sleep at night better you need to meet calorie demands during the day. So I won’t let her sleep more than a two hour stretch during the day, but she also has her brother that tends to make a lot of noise so sometimes her naps aren’t very long as it is. I’m honestly of the mindset that if the baby is crying at night or in general then they need something whether that’s some comfort in the form of a pacifier, food, to be held, they’re hot/cold, etc. They’re crying or fussing to have some basic need met.  But as a fellow mom, I have to respect a moms decision to do what’s best for her and her baby! We’re no good to our kids if we’re not feeling well. Good luck!

I didnt really sleep train my son just winged it hes now going from 7pm til 7/8am with one bottle between 4 and 5 he used to be up every 1-2 hours for a feed xx

My son wakes up too he turned 5 months on the 14th. I just get up and feed him when he wakes up but last night I fed him at 9 pm, he woke up at 12am, I gave him his paci, rubbed his head and he went back to sleep till 530am it was really nice.
I have no judgment over the CIO method as long as its not too long of a time.
