Vitamins before second IVF cycle? Recommendations?

Sarah • IVF Momma 🤍 Angel Momma🤍

My husband and I went through our first IVF in 2018 and were blessed with a baby girl! She is 10 months old💗 We plan to do another round hopefully this year (will schedule a consult after my daughter turns 1) So I assume we will have to do the testing all over and it’ll take a while to actually get started. I just turned 32 and my husband will be 43 this summer, another reason we don’t want to wait too long. So our first IVF went very well, UNTIL after retrieval/fertilization. I responded well to the meds, had 29 mature eggs retrieved, his sample was good, no issues- and then we got a call the next morning that NONE fertilized naturally and it was so devastating. We didn’t do ICSI our Dr said we didn’t need it. OBVIOUSLY we know better for the next round. We ended up with 1 frozen blast, not PGS tested and that’s our daughter! Nothing leftover so we will have to start from the beginning and I’m hoping it will go better and hopefully my egg reserve is still ok after 2 years. So I started taking some vitamins on my own, and it might sound like a stupid question but is it ok to take COQ10 without discussing first? I’m sure it only helps! I’ve read great things. I also take vitamin D and C, folic acid and prenatal. I also have my hubby take vitamins. We still do not know what exactly happened and if we are looking at an egg or sperm issue?! That’ll be my first question when we do follow up! Any other vitamins we should be taking that you recommend?? Thank you!🙂

Side note- my husband was never diagnosed with anything, but the “volume” was on lower side. But I guess what was there was normal. It was never super high but okay, usually between 11-20 mil? They never really said we had an issue which is why it was so shocking when we had none fertilize. The Dr just said egg and sperm weren’t communicating, wasn’t penetrating. Wasn’t funny at the time but NOW we joke about how his sperm is just like him- NO sense of direction 🙄 I just want to be better prepared!

I have done 3 IVF rounds and have had a fertilization issue. My first round of IVF was in Nov. 2018, I was 34 years old, and I had six eggs all of them fertilized, but only one made it to 5 day blast. It turned out to be a miscarriage. I took the next 3 months to take CoQ10 and DHEA. The second cycle was in Aug 2019. We got 12 eggs , only one fertilized. 3rd cycle 8 eggs, none fertilized. The embryologist said that we have an egg quality issue. CoQ10 and DHEA didn't do much for me and I am no longer taking them. I am not a big believer in them, but they are vitamins that are OK to take before you talk to your doctor. When you do have your consult, I would let your Dr know you are taking them.

I am going to transfer the one I got from the second round (keeps getting delayed for various reasons but hopefully in June). If it doesn't work, we will have to reevaluate. My doctor does not think I should continue IVF unless it is with egg donor. If ICIS worked for you, than I am sure it will be the route to go this time around too and maybe knowing everything from your first cycle will help them better plan your protocol this time around.

I’m so sorry, it’s such a tough road isn’t it? Are you doing another cycle? Yes it’s a huge fear of mine to have another fertilization issue like our first round. When I look back- I kick myself for not doing ICSI.. but we didn’t know any better and our Dr said we didn’t need it. They did perform ICSI the next morning when they realized none fertilized but after 24 hours it’s almost too late, We were lucky to even have had 1 make it! So next time obviously ICSI will be done from the start. And so idk what the problem was yet. Our Dr said we both looked good. I was 30 at the time and my husband 41. I was at risk for OHSS but I do not have PCOS. The embryologist said all 29 eggs looked great and were mature, I'm just confused. Now my husband was on Testosterone therapy and when we started ttc they stopped that and put him on Clomid instead. So I’m just wondering if we have a small male issue and also 29 eggs retrieved doesn’t always mean good quality. Not sure, I’ll def ask my Dr when we see him. I’ll also mention the vitamins bcus during the first round he said I didn’t need anything other than a prenatal. Thank you:)
