Q-tips

I've always heard not to use q-tips as they just push wax and water back into the ear drum!!! Although when I shower, bathe, or swim it is a must for me to clean out water an wax with a q-tip as I just have too...its an obsession!! Do you think it's bad and if so why??? Or is it ok to do so???
