Do talent shows exploit vulnerable people?

So I know shows such as X factor / American idol etc definitely aren’t as big as what they once were, but it got me thinking.

There’s ALWAYS contestants who audition who so clearly DO NOT have any talent. These people have to audition in front of producers before they even get to the judges, so they are obviously well aware of who they are about to put on tv.

A lot of these people are clearly vulnerable or perhaps even have mental illness which is then put on tv clearly to be made fun of. We are all guilty im sure of laughing at these people and the reality is it does entertain. Some people only watch shows like this for those contestants.

I get it that tv shows are all about ratings and clearly this gives ratings a boost

Is this morally wrong? Should these shows be allowed to do this? Or is it maybe even a discriminatory issue?
