Forward facing seat??

Question

Has anyone switched their baby to forward facing yet ? My state law says once a baby is 1 and 20 pounds . But articles are saying until two , then others are saying based on height . My son is 10 months and 21 pounds and his doctor says he’s in the 90th percentile for height and hes starting to look a bit big for the rear facing seat .

As more and more research comes out, it’s essential that you leave your baby rear facing for a minimum of two years. Sometimes their legs will look squished, but they’re fine. Height and weight are proving to not be as significant as spine and neck development. I would highly suggest watching some crash test videos to show the difference on impact when rear vs forward facing.

I kept my older daughter rear facing until she was 3.5. She’s always been 80%+ for height so ya, she did look squished, but honestly she knew no different. It’s safest to keep them rear facing for as long as possible until their skeletal structure is developed enough to withstand the blow from an accident better.

Is your baby still in the infant (bucket type) seat? Or a convertible seat? The convertible seats are made to grow with your child and keep them rear facing for quite a long time.  We are switching our 11 month old to her convertible seat (rear facing) in the next few weeks because she has grown uncomfortable and fussy in her infant seat.  I second all of the women who say keep rear facing as long as absolutely possible, and in every case until at least 2 years old.  A little discomfort is a lot better than the alternative in the event of an accident.

I find it hard to believe that your 9 month old is at the end of a rear facing seat when I’ve seen 3-4 year olds fit safely. You can’t put a price on the safety of your child I would be looking for a new extended rear facing seat.

I switched my first forward around a year and a half.. my daughter is much smaller so I probably won't until she's at least 2..

The AAP recommends not switching until your baby reaches the max weight or height limits rear facing (whichever happens first). My oldest is extremely petite (and developmentally delayed) and is rear facing at 5.5 years old. My middle daughter would be rear facing still but we couldn’t get a good install with the seatbelt rear facing after she outgrew the latch weight limits, so we had to forward face her at 3.5 years. My little guy will be rear facing for as long as we can. Most convertible seats have a 40-50 pound weight limit. The Car Seat Lady has some really great information on all of this as well.

Definitely not. Probably won’t be until we’ll after she’s 2. My oldest hit the height, weight, and age requirements right at 2 so she’s been switched for a few months now. My June baby is so small though I don’t see that happening. It’s much safer to rear face as long as you possibly can.
