Do your children have god parents?

I don’t have any friends so my children don’t have god parents or anyone in my family to ask.

My husbands ex wife is our kids “Godmother”. They have two kids and we have two kids. If something were to happen to her, we’d obviously get their two, but if something happened to us, our kids would go to her and grow up with their siblings.
We have a great relationship with her. We do vacations and family stuff with her and she’s just as apart of our family as she could be. We all love her to death. Hubs and her didn’t work as a married couple but are good friends and great co-parents and I lucked out to get a really great friend out of it.

I think my sister and brother in law will be my baby’s god parents but I want to write a will and have this in writing/legal. The thought of something happening to my husband and I and her not having a specific guardian to go to scares the hell out of me. We have plenty of family and even a couple good friends who would take her but doesn’t mean I want those people to be her guardians if that makes sense.

I named my daughter’s Guardians because my husband and I aren’t religious. We had a non-denominational wedding. So instead of christening and god parents I just had our lawyer write up papers naming my aunt and uncle guardians in case of my husband’s and my passing.

Our child has godparents but not in the traditional “you’ll take care of them if we die” sense. Her god parents are my best friend and my husbands best friend. They are not related to us in anyway. We wanted her to have someone she could go to and talk with about things she might not be comfortable talking to us about. Our friends know that we don’t expect them to tell us everything that she talks to them about. It’s at there discretion. If they think it’s something we really need to know about they will tell us. That’s the relationship I have with my godparents and I am so grateful to have them in my life. I think it’s a great resource for our child to have trusted adults besides us in her life.

My baby doesn’t have Godparents partially because I don’t want to think about him going somewhere if I die unexpectedly. And partially because I feel like so many people would be offended we didn’t pick them. 😏
