Should one have to take a test to become a citizen of that country? (Not just us)

My parents did and I thought it was kind of useless. Most of the facts they had to memorize weren't things the average US citizen knows, so why do they have to know that? Maybe if the the questions were more about social customs and laws it would be good, but the average American wouldn't be able to pass the current US citizen test. It just asks things like "What war did Eisenhower fight in before he became president?" and "Who was a writer of the Federalist papers?" Like I just don't understand what they're going to do with that information. In order to gain citizenship, you need to have lived in the country for such a long time that you probably know the general history, laws, and customs of the land anyway. I don't think knowing discreet facts like those are important at all.

yes and no. i took the one people have to take to become a canadian and i thought some of the questions were unfair and unnecessary - i wouldn’t have passed and i’m canadian 😂 i remember one question was about an old hockey player - not even relevant now 😂🤷🏼‍♀️ 
ps. as a canadian i know hockey is apart of many of our lives, but honestly it’s not an important factor in becoming a citizen 😂

Yes, I believe that people should have a basic knowledge of the country and their official language(s), to become a citizen.

Basic knowledge, yeah. But a lot of the questions asked in the tests are stuff that a lot of citizens born in the country may not even know anyways. I’ve never understood the point of those questions.
