Can an OBGYN prescribe meds?

Ladies, this might be a dumb question but I'm new to this!
I'm seeing my ob on Monday and need a refill for my asthma inhaler. Do you think she can prescribe that? I'm also thinking of going back on meds for anxiety.

From working in physician offices in the past, it’s really your primary care doc that should prescribe these. OBs usually don’t know the correct dose or refills for asthma meds but she may help with anxiety meds if your old med is fine to take while pregnant.
There’s also side effects that need monitoring and Insurance prior auths that need to be done that specialty docs just don’t have time to spend hours on the phone doing.

they *can* prescribe but it’s really more appropriate to get refills for chronic conditions through your primary care physician who manages them. every provider is different though, but as an NP, i personally wouldn’t refill and would leave that for your primary doctor who has managed your asthma

Mine does. That was the first thing he asked me at my 8 weeks appointment was if I needed my inhaler refilled which I do now going in at 22 weeks. He said at anytime if I run out to call him and he’d have it filled. The other meds i don’t know, But can’t hurt to ask.

I mean any doctor can technically prescribe anything but it’s at their discretion. I’m a medical secretary for a big cardiology clinic and any of the doctors are happy to refill prescriptions for us as long as it’s not pain killers but they won’t prescribe us anything new. For example, my gp prescribed me Zofran for nausea but the law only allows four pills at a time and no refillable prescriptions. So after I had the first script I have one of my bosses refill it about twice a week so I don’t have to call the gp, wait for a call back, wait for their secretary to fax the prescription etc. Legally and technically your obgyn can refill your prescription but it’s completely at their discretion. Bring in your most recent one with the pharmacy sticker showing the dosage etc and that would be super helpful.
