I think it depends on surgery.
If your getting anything on your lower half (aka knee replacement) I wouldn't want to be on my period just because I use the rr often. But it's safe to have it while on your period. Just know you'll more then likely be in pain after surgery

I started my period two days early on the morning of my kidney stone removal surgery. Like another commenter said they give you mesh absorbant disposable panties. Not flattering in any way but I had also been planning this for about 6 weeks, had rearranged schedules, got time of work so rescheduling would of been a huge hassle.

I had a splenectomy while having my period. I had to wear a pad and mesh underwear like I was postpartum again.
