Do NOT take castor oil please!!

I deeply felt the need to write this post after seeing SO MANY ladies posting about taking castor oil to induce themselves. 
I took castor oil in 2015 to induce myself and my son pooped while I was in labor and was born with sepsis and almost died. 
He was in the NICU for 7 days on an IV for antibiotics. He was born 12/23 and I couldn’t take him home for Christmas. 
Leaving the hospital without your baby is the WORST feeling and I have never forgiven myself. 
I know that these last weeks are especially hard but please, be safe. Your baby will be here in this world with you before you even know it!

Thank you!! I took it when I was pregnant with my first and I was lucky nothing happened to my baby. My aunt gave it to me but of course I was misinformed. After I heard so many horror stories about other moms taking it and all I can do it be grateful that it wasn’t my story. Just because my baby was ok doesn’t mean I’m going to tell other mothers that it’s ok. I’ve heard of very few doctors/midwives that will approve it and if I came across one that did I would find a new provider ASAP. (Btw it never worked for me)

I politely disagree. YES, castor oil can absolutely induce labor naturally and safely, as long as it is done properly and under the care of your midwife. I’ve had 3 babies naturally and my last was induced by castor oil, dosed and given to me directly under the supervision of my midwife.  It is NOT something to be done on your own because you absolutely can take too much and cause your baby to poop in utero. Like someone else commented, taking the incorrect dose can cause more harm than good. And that’s because people are impatient and misinformed about how castor oil works to induce labor, if it’s right for them, and how to dose it correctly.
While castor oil did work to induce my labor with my last, I personally wouldn’t do it again because the amount of times I pooped was so extremely uncomfortable. It did what it had to do and it worked safely, but I personally did not like the effects. And again, I was given it directly from my midwife, and closely monitored.
Please get legitimate medical advice before trying to do something like induce your own labor.

I had my first at 41 weeks no trying to induce myself ended up with an emergency c section baby had pooped while in my belly she was fine but I got an infection.

I’m sorry to hear about your loss. But There are doctors who say it’s perfectly fine to take castor oil, if you consult your OB before hand and they give the okay I don’t see a problem with it. I think the problem comes when women take too much because it “didn’t work” or they want to “ensure it works.” 
I know a handful of people who have taken it, a couple took it with multiple pregnancies and had no issues with baby pooping in the womb.
I’d definitely say to anyone who decided to take it to ask your ob and do your own research first beforehand.
