Baby led weening...

So my little boy is 5 months old and we’ve just introduced purées because when we eat he wants to eat too! We all sit round the table for dinner even before we started solids to introduce him to it. He absolutely loves his purées and finishes the whole lot! However a friend keeps telling me to do baby led weening. The idea is a great one however I feel like its just not possible when your baby is ready for food but not quite capable to navigate finger foods..

Am I misunderstanding the concept? Can you do baby-led before they can eat finger foods?
