subchorionic hemorrhage (hematoma)

I was diagnosed with a 4cm hematoma when I was 8 weeks pregnant. After a couple red bleeds, I bled brown everyday until it completely stopped for the last 4 - 5 weeks. I’m now 17w4d. I had my 16w ultrasound and my regular ob didn’t see the hematoma but they used a smaller machine. My ob said they use smaller machines for the 16w ultrasounds since it is to only evaluate heart tones. She told to just continue to act as if the hematoma is there meaning pelvic rest and no exercise.

My next ultrasound is in a few weeks at the 19 week mark with a high risk doctor. According to my ob, the high risk doc has better machines and will be able to see what’s going on with my hematoma so I need to take it easy until my 19w ultrasound.

I was OK with that answer until my partner thought it was totally unacceptable that they’d use a low quality machine since this isn’t a normal pregnancy. He felt frustrated that they couldn’t confirm the status of the hematoma. I think a part of him is frustrated that I’m on pelvic rest and was hoping for some good news since I haven’t been bleeding. I’m sure it’s very frustrating that he can’t come with me and ask questions due to new Covid guidelines.

My partner suggested we get another ultrasound. I called my high risk doc who told me to wait until our scheduled appointment at 19 weeks because more ultrasounds doesn’t change the situation. He said he sees hematomas all the time, it’s good I made it to my second tri and to try and forget about it. 😞 He said call him if I bleed.

I then called my regular ob and she understands my anxiety around this and can fit me in tomorrow and use a bigger machine.

A part of me is desperate to know the status of the hematoma because I’ve been cramping more than usual the last few days in areas that cramped up when I bled. Then, there’s another part of me that doesn’t want an excessive amount of ultrasounds and harm the baby.

Thoughts? Should I get the additional ultrasound ?
