Does breastfeeding hurt?

This is my first pregnancy I want to get an idea of what to expect

It can, especially if the latch is incorrect. Honestly, after they initially latch it shouldn’t hurt  for more than 30 seconds. If it still does, something isn’t right. 
If you have the opportunity, take a breast feeding class before you have your baby. It’s really great to have as much information as possible.

It did for me in the beginning. There is a ruthless, hungry human sucking on your nipples for several hours a day. They can become very tender. It got better after several weeks and stopped hurting completely. 
I nursed my first daughter for 21 months and my second for 2.5yrs. My second chipped a tooth at one point and nursing was sometimes painful after that.

It does at first, especially if baby has a bad latch. With my first, it was painful for about four weeks. He had a perfect latch, but my nipples had to get used to it. 
My second baby had a slight tongue tie and had a bad latch until he was about 6 weeks old. It was very painful until he figured out his latch. 
My third will be 3 weeks on Monday. I've yet to experience any pain from breastfeeding him.

I’d say your nipples are sore for about the first week and your breasts are sore due to engorgement the first 2-3 weeks. Then you’ll start regulating and it’ll feel a lot better. Make sure to get some nipple cream and a milk saver or haaka. The milk saver or haaka will relieve so much pressure in your breasts by collecting extra milk. It’ll also give you an opportunity to freeze some milk without having to pump!

It hurts at first, then your nipples will adjust and it won’t hurt at all anymore. Use nipple cream after every feeding from the very first feeding until it passes, it will help! It’s not uncommon to get chapped and have your crack or bleed. For me it never hurt horribly, my daughter had a good latch from the beginning, it should never be excruciating and if it is then there might be a latch issue that needs to be corrected or a clogged milk duct or an infection like mastitis.

To start with yes. You’re not used to it and it can be uncomfortable and painful to begin. But as long as baby’s latch is good and there are no tongue or lip ties, it *should* go smoothly. Don’t be afraid to reach out to lactation consultant- your hospital, midwife, whoever delivers should be able to help you out with that!
