I'm watching paternity court and the alleged father was explaining that he decided to step up and sign the birth certificate even though his girlfriend cheated and his girlfriend said "like you should" and then the mother went on to say that he's wrong for wanting to walk out of the babys life if it's not his

Absolutely not. If he’s questioning the paternity, he should not sign the birth certificate before confirming that the child is his.

You can “step up” without legally acknowledging paternity. He should have a paternity test done ASAP if there’s a doubt and then sign the birth certificate of not from there on.

That’s a dumb thing to do. They don’t give him the money back that he paid in child support if the child is later proved to not be his.

No if there’s any doubt you should get a paternity test. Period. I don’t think he’s wrong either because if the child isn’t even good he’s locked in to sporting the child for a minimum of 18 years and could potentially end up having no relationship with the child. Responsibility of a child is a lot when you are the biological parent.
