Yes they should. The whole point of prison is rehabilitation and not allowing them to work and get a taste for that isn't going to help them very much on the outside.

Our entire prison system needs reformed- basically from the ground up, imo. 
Prisoners are currently used as a source of cheap labor, and are basically modern slaves. This form of punishment is barbaric, outdated, and only useful to companies who benefit from cheap labor. It is NOT useful for society. 
Prisoners barely have any money, then they are released, most likely to reoffend if they have no one to help them get back on their feet with limited employment prospects. 
Our current system doesn't reform anyone, it doesn't protect society as effectively as it should. 
So, anyway, yes, I think if prisoners could actually earn legitimate wages while in prison, that would be extremely positive for society as well as them as individuals. Poverty and crime are absolutely connected- if you are desperate, you are more likely to break the law.

Yes. While they do have jobs in prison and some prisons have programs that will aid in job seeking after release (like cosmetology programs), they really don’t earn much. What they earn in prison is to help with commissary, phone time and medical (which is shit). 
When they are released, there needs to be better programs out there to help then stay off the streets. Trying to find a job that accepts felons is so difficult. Same with housing. Part of the reason they go back to prison or crime is because they can’t find stable jobs and stable housing. 
If prison is truly about rehabilitation, then there needs to be better opportunities for those who get out of prison.

I think they should have the oppertunity to LEARN while in prison.  Maybe a trade or classes etc.  Something to help them be prepared for a successful life after their release.

In the states they do work..... they don’t earn hardly anything but they still work..... just jobs around the prison and that money is given to them when they get out.

I think it's a great idea to let some prisoners that's have shown a willingness to change to participate in certain jobs like working in the mail room, cooking, and perhaps even taking trips outside the prison to clean up and better their community. Give them a chance to earn some money, learn valuable life skills, and gain experience so when released they have a chance and don't resort back to crime.

We have work release programs in SC. Some get real jobs that actually earn money. Some work for the county and don't even get paid for what they need at the prison. Most still do it just because it gets them out of the jail. Some state prisoners do these, too. I think they should all have access to education and jobs.

The goal SHOULD be to teach people how to be productive members of society instead of just how to be better criminals. There is no point in having a punishment that doesn't cause you to learn to do better. They should earn at least minimum wage while in, but they should have most of it go into a savings account so that they have money when they leave for a deposit on an place to rent, clothes, food and other necessities. No money when you leave prison equals going back to the same people that got you in trouble in the first place. I've seen it happen with a family friend of ours. He only had one place to go when he got out and that person caused him to land right back in, but if he had a way to be independent of her he wouldn't have found himself in trouble again.
