In my experience at the time of the abuse I felt weak and scared and in hide and survive mode and when abusers aren’t abusing they tend to be magical and perfect super nice and buying presents and I didn’t ever think about leaving during the good times because that’s all I wanted was him like that all the time. I eventually left when the verbal abuse was starting to be towards me and my kids but it was not easy I was like him for 4 years

Yes, it’s almost always hard. One of the major reasons why is because not only are they verbally, emotionally, or physically abusing you, but they are psychologically manipulating you to believe certain things that make it very hard to leave.￼

It’s always hard to leave an abusive situation. You probably love your partner, and people who abuse other people are normally very manipulative.
It is possibly even harder to walk away from someone abusive than it is to walk away from any other relationship.
