He says he likes me but seems distanced

I’ve been hooking up with this guy for some time now. I told him I like him & he said he likes me too but he wants to take things slow. He’s mysterious because when we’re together he’s sweet, loving, holds me, kisses me but when we’re not together he seems distanced & sends basic texts. He’s so hard to read. I’ve made cute little cryptic post on Facebook story specifically for him that no one else would get but him & he doesn’t even mention what I’ve said. I don’t know if it’s because he’s been hurt in the past, had a lot happen to him, he seems to have some depression & thinks low of himself. I just don’t know. Should I wait it out a few more months or move on?
