Conspiracy theories, satanism, and the evangelical right.
Before I start, let me acknowledge my own biases. I am a Christian and align theologically, though not politically, with evangelicalism, though more in the 1500s reformation sense of the word than the modern 21st century iteration. I am morally conservative, but more libertarian than anything else when it comes to politics.
My question is this:
What do you think drives some evangelical Christians to traffic in demonstrably false conspiracy theories and find satanism, demonic oppression, and satanic cults behind every bush? Whether it's celebrity child trafficking rings that purportedly exist to steal adrenochrome from defenseless children in an eternal life/stay young forever scheme or that Antifa/BLM supporters are part of an evil, Democratic Party/George Soros-funded cabal determined to overthrow America and sacrifice it on the altar of unfettered Marxism - or any other popular conspiracy theory - why is satan automatically assumed to be part of it? Said differently, why are so many on the evangelical right so obsessed with conspiracy theories that hinge on satanism, satanic cults, and just satan in general?
**Please don't use this topic as an opportunity to bash Christians or condemn to hell those who are not Christians. If it gets out of hand, I will delete it. I'm looking for a real discussion, not a brawl.
