How do you know if your having a miscarriage??
How do you know if your baby is still alive in your uterus??

First of all I'll be praying for you and hope this is not the case for you. And remember spotting during pregnancy can be normal.

I'm sure it's slightly different for everyone but In the very early stages I just felt a little crampy and tired during the Dayana some brown spotting. then when I got home the cramps got worse and I felt nauseous, dizzy, and tired. I started spitting much heavier and didn't want to get out of bed (or knew if I could) by bedtime the pain was unbearable and all I could do was sit on the toilet because there was so much blood and clot. My first mc lasted 1 night and I passed everything then. My 2nd lasted 2 nights.

As far as know if your baby is still in the uterus there are a couple things that can tell you this...
An ultrasound. Or seeing your baby when you miscarry.

If you think you may be miscarrying call your doctor. There not anything they can really do to stop it but they can give you pain medicine (or just suggest Ibuprofen(800mg) ). 
Also there are some supplies you can gather to help determine what is your baby and how to handle him or her. I'm posting a picture of the supplies and direction below if you need them. (I am studying to be a bereavement Doula, which is where all my info comes from).

How far along are you?

Answer

Bad pain and blood is usually the first sign. If you are getting really bad pain or bleeding, go to the hospital. 
If you can't feel your baby move yet, I always went with, no pain, no blood, no issues.
