Ex lax safe to take ?

I’m 30 weeks and just started taking iron supplements . They are making me super constipated, i took an ex lax my doctor said I could take a stool softener but I’m dumb ex lax is a laxative i don’t understand the difference effects wise and now I’m worried whether it was safe or not??
