Find a new babysitter ??

Question

I just recently hired a babysitter for my 1year old. Sitter is 18 y/o in collage for child development. She’s outgoing, very friendly and daughter likes her. Her first day, she couldn’t feed my daughter, baby kept refusing the bottle and wanted to keep playing. No biggie, I mean it’s her first day right? I cant expect much since they both getting to know each other. I noticed she was on the phone a lot! .... phone is okay to use AS LONG AS BABY IS TAKEN CARE OF. 
Well, she was drinking water and never washed her cup, left it in the living room. Okay whatever not a big deal. Second day, shes able to feed her. Yayy! But I see she’s using her phone again, a lot. Okay as long as baby is fed, clean, and happy playing... right? ... it was time for her to leave, so I noticed her cup of water in the living room AGAIN!... I said “hey that’s ur cup right?” She apologized and I said no problem. So, she left the apartment, I go grab my baby, and noticed her pants dirty!!! Literally 💩. This was yesterday, today is her day off, I didn’t call or text her so that I can talk to her tomorrow face to face. To be honest I am very upset. But I honestly don’t know what to do. I am not a bad person, I like to give people the benefit of the doubt... but this is my daughter we are talking about, she literally could get an infection if 💩 diaper is not changed. Or a rash .. Should I talk to her and hope she gets better? Or time for me to look for another babysitter? Also, yes I will be home for a week until they both get used to each other but starting Oct 1st I will be going to work. ANY advice, opinion is welcome. Thank you

Maybe she is inexperienced?  She probably needs you to train her just as any employee would need to be.  You need to do a run through with her, step by step, exactly as you would do everything or how you want her to do everything.  If she is inexperienced, she might feel uncomfortable to be at free roam of your home.  That could explain her cup of water left in the living room.  Just explain to her that you would like her to wash any dishes she uses.  Let her know that as the caretaker of your child, you see her as a extension to the family and that she is holding a great deal of responsibility.  It’s so common for the teenage babysitter to just sit there, on their phone and think they need to be present just in case an emergency arises when parents aren’t there.  You need to give clear expectations to her.  Honestly, she just might not know.  I would talk with her first before letting her go.  But it doesn’t hurt to keep looking for someone that might be a better fit.

Okayyyy, so just my point of view here. 1. Your upset over a glass? Like what? You think she’s purposely doing it do irritate you? 😳 2. There have been. Times with my OWN children, that I change them and 2 seconds later they fill their diaper, so unless it was dry or something there’s not really much to be upset over? She could have changed her 5 minutes before you walked through the door and you wouldn’t have known. Seems like your being a little harsh to me. I say this as a former babysitter and 20 something mom of 2 and one one the way under two. Just my thoughts though! Not trying to come at you or anything.

Just tell her. Tell her that you'd like her to clean up after herself and the baby when she is babysitting. Tell her you expect to come home to a clean baby with a clean diaper.

My first baby sitting gig I had no clue what to do with a baby and when. I had to rely on the older child to tell me what to do. I wish the parents had taken an hour to go over expectations and show me how they do things. Just sit her down and tell her what you like, you can even play it like "I was so busy, im sorry we never got around to explaining how things are done around here but I have a few moments if you want me to give you lay of the land"

I think the phone thing is no big deal if baby is under her attention at all times which means cleaned, fed, not crying, etc or sleeping. I understand the frustration with the water though, she should know not to leave her cup. I would talk to her nicely about the cup and tell her you want/expect her to clean up after herself. Lastly, with the pamper you could ask her if she changed her to get better clarification as to what happened, maybe she did change her a couple mins before you came or maybe she changed her in the middle of pooping and she just wasn’t finished. If not, I would talk to her about keeping her pamper changed. I think a run down of everything you basically expect her to do would help her more to understand and she would do it. If not, I would then fire her. 🙂

I would sit her down and tell her your concerns. Tell her what is bugging you and how you would like things done. 
Maybe write some rules down for her and tell her to clean up after herself.

I mean I think her being on her phone too much could be a problem but I don't see anything wrong right away with the other things. I'm sure she probably just keeps forgetting to wash her water cup which I don't see why that's such a big deal and for all you know your daughter could have pooped like immediately before the sitter left and she just didn't notice. Do you notice when your daughter poops immediately every single time? I doubt it. I would talk to her about being on her phone less and give her a chance.

Talk to her. Tell her why you’re upset and what needs to be done. Give her another chance. If things don’t change then I’d find another baby sitter

You have to be specific on how you want her to care for your child. At 18, even though she's going to school, she may not know what to do or what you expect of her. When I first started babysitting the family walked me through everything they normally do. And then once I was by myself they had a specific list or schedule for me to follow. Eventually you learn and no longer need a chest sheet. It sounds like you were just hoping she knew what you wanted or what she was supposed to do. But the way you raise your children may be different than how she was raised so she needs guidance and to know what yuu expect. Also with the diaper I cannot imagine she would purposely leave a baby in a diaper like that. It looks like a blow out so maybe that'd exactly what happened. Sometimes I wasn't aware my daughter had a nasty diaper or blow out right away. However of you find that this was intentional I would fire her over that because she knew baby pooped and did nothing. If you do end up finding a sitter find someone older with experience or more experience
