Sudden crying

My baby is 12 weeks and the last few days he will be fine all day but have one or two times where something random that I can’t understand will send him into a minute or two or pained sounding crying. He will be consoled by a bottle or pacifier. One time he was on his play mat and I have no idea what scared him. Another time he was sitting on my lap and he lightly hit himself in the face with his hand which normally wouldn’t bother him but it freaked him out. Another time he was pulling a blanket over his head up and down and suddenly got scared? Is this the 12 week leap maybe, anyone else see similar behavior?
