What to do: STINKY apartment! Tips? Help!

I got my first formal apartment in August, which is very exciting to have our own space entirely after renting from my parents for three years with a very poorly set up apt, while nice, it had no windows and horrid stairs and the ties to my parents were toxic. Anyhow our new apartment is in an affordable community, we had to move quick and I’m a single mom to a almost 4 year old and 1 year old. The apartment STINKS. I have done everything I can think of or google (I think) I diffuse air purifying essential oils very often, rented a carpet cleaner and deep cleaned the carpets and floors, use baking soda when I vacuum, leave a box in every room, and have wiped everything down as much as possible with vinegar/thieves cleaner. It still smells. Itsgetting in everything, our clothes, our things, everything. It seems like it’s in the subfloor; because the vents under the building (accessible externally) have the same smell coming from them. I know they have had problems with sewer roaches. And cats live under the building. So it’s not something I can truly do anything about. Any tips? Or will I have to just tolerate it until we can move? I have a year lease, and would like to set us up to move well in the next year, but I have to figure this out it drives me nuts when I get a whiff of myself and it smells like our new to us home that smells horrible lol.

Edited to add, I did not do a walk through prior to renting, it was something that we had to move as soon as possible and so it’s partially my own fault and I thought I’d be able to remedy it. They have done a coat of paint over the walls before I moved in (and seems like there are several coats so they do this every move in) I don’t know if I could break the lease but if I could AND find a place that’s still more affordable And no smell i would! I will look into it more. I’ll also see about adding a filter to the air vents. It’s an affordable community and I feel like I have no right to say anything or complain, I’m very grateful to be able to be in our own space but the smell is pretty wretched. Like a cross between pet urine and smoke.
