Sick/covid sick pay

Okay this may be a stupid question. I work in retail part time (no paid vacay hours) & usually when I have a drs appt I just request the day off as unpaid. I have some sick hours but I use those after I call out and miss a day for being sick. I always assumed I could only use my sick hour pay when you miss a day for being sick but can I request to use my sick pay & covid sick pay when I put in for a doctors appt ahead of time??
