Why don't we have a polical left in the US?

Question

It seems like we have the GOP that is extremely far right and the Democrats that are pretty everyone else but mostly represented by moderately right politicians. 
I don't really know when this trend started. But it seems to me like it has been going on as long as I have been able to vote. And I really noticed it in 2016. 
I think this happens because the GOP gets more and more conservative and the Democrats try to be "center" to appeal to more people. So now our center is almost middle conservative. And all 3rd party or independents gets pushed out.
I would be happier with a voting system that gives a broader spectrum of candidates. Like ranked choice voting. That way we could maybe end up with 4 to 6 major political parties instead of two.

I’m curious about where this chart came from, I’m not sure I completely agree. 
Anyway, we’re super centrist because the right pushes so far in that direction that any mild opposition looks radical. Other countries are judging us for good reason.

Democrats try to be center????? Hahahaha 😂😂😂 Have you been paying any attention to anything going on lately? There is an extreme right, but there is also an extreme left. And the 2 parties have gone so far right and so far left that they refuse to work together to accomplish anything. The democrats are not for everyone else. They have an extreme agenda just like the republicans.

Because it's so far right that the slightest bit left seems so extreme.
I live in New Zealand.
The graph I found on the same site as your one is for NZ wasn't very accurate. So here are two I found better. But still not perfect. Green and labour are both more left than the graph shows, and NZ first should be in the blue, not red square. They are pretty much between national and new conservative.
The graph with the overlapping circles is more accurate and representative.
I fit in a cozy little spot between green and labour.
In NZ, our society is pretty progressive. It is generally very accepting and willing to change, and I find so much of what happens in the US astounding.
When we had a mass shooting, people literally handed over their guns willingly. We had gang members standing outside mosques protecting Muslims while they worshipped.
We have a few people who are anti mask, anti lockdown etc, but the majority just do what we have to do to be a good society, not just a bunch of individuals doing our own thing. And it breaks my heart to see lots of people in the US who don't care about the safety of others, and just care about their *rights*.
I wish the US wasn't so far right. But I don't see it changing any time soon!

I think we should start with getting rid of the electoral college and have a popular vote. I haven't really read up on ranked choice voting so I don't know how that would work. Or if it would give us more parties or just more candidates in the same 2 parties.

Yeahh its either a very very right person or a very right person. I think it’s because capitalism is seen as “freedom” and “American” while socialism is “communism” and “terrible”. 
We can all see 100% capitalism is NO good. Too much of everything is bad for you, even water.

Because as children or history books shove "America is great" and "capitalism is the best system." I remember thinking as a middle schooler about all the problems with capitalism and being told I was wrong without explanation when I mentioned it. Every bad thing our country has done is written in our history as either a necessary evil for progress or the worst parts are hidden so those who don't question believe it wasn't that bad. We're also taught not to question and to believe what's in the textbooks because that's "facts." Now I grew up in the rural south so my upbringing could've been different. But because that's the America we live in, millions are willing to blindly believe that we are still great and don't need to change. They refuse to hear that the countries they were taught aren't doing as well as us actually have happier people that are better off than our people. They are told that the suffering in America is by choice and blame those suffering instead of helping. We are stubborn in change and too stubborn to admit we're wrong and need help and change. And that's the America we live in.
