Depends on why you stopped being friends. 
I had a best friend in middle school and we grew apart in high school, but still connected occasionally. After graduation we went on vastly different paths, she ended up moving to Egypt. In the last couple of years we reconnected by texting and video chatting. We’re just as comfortable around each other now in our mid twenties as we were when we were 13.

From my experience no. I’ve tried multiple times, with multiple people, and it never went well.

Yes it absolutely can work. I’ve done it successfully several times in my life with different friends. Some we just grew apart. One we had a falling out, but are now closer than ever. I think in the case of a falling out, depending on the people and the offenses, as long as both parties are willing to take accountability, apologize, forgive, and put it behind them, it can work.￼
