My birth story. December baby turned into October baby!
Hey everyone! Things have been a whirlwind, now that things have settled down, I'm ready to share my story.
I was at work on Wednesday, October 7th when I started feeling cramps at about 11 30 in the morning. I thought I just needed to poop and was trying to wait it out til I got off work at 5. I sent my hubby a message to tell him what was happening and he insisted I call the nurse. After I refused, he called the nurse for me. The nurse then called me and said I should come in a be evaluated. So I left work around 3 30 to head to the hospital. At this point, I thought they were going to evaluate and send me back home. When we got to the Hospital, they evaluated me and said I was 3 cm dialated. At that point I realized that what I had been feeling were in fact, contractions. They gave me an iv and a steroid shot to help develop baby's lungs faster, and shipped me by ambulance to a hospital better equipped to deal with a preemie. My hubby drove his vehicle and met us at the hospital. When I got to Iowa city they got me all settled into a labor and delivery room. They checked me again, and I had dialated to 5 cm. They told me that I was not leaving the hospital until I had the baby, they were not sure at this time how long it would b until that happened. They had a goal of giving me a second steroid shot, which needed to be done about 24 hours after the first one. So I spent the night Wednesday and all day Thursday in the hospital, I was contracting off and on the whole time and some were stronger than others. Thursday night, they got to give me the second steroid shot around 7 pm. Around 11 Thursday night I went to use the restroom and noticed the amount of blood down there was picking up, and my contractions were getting stronger. I let my nurse know, and she went and got the doctors. The doctors came in and examined me and said I was fully dialated and my water was about to break on its own. At this point, my hubby was starting to stir and got up to come to my side. The drs left to prepare the NICU staff of his arrival and the anesthesiologist came in and gave my epidural, left, and the drs came back in. They broke my water and it was time to start pushing! I began pushing, and I'm not even sure how many pushes it took, but it was quite a few. Baby's heart rate stayed strong through all of it. When his head came out, I had to stop pushing briefly because his cord was wrapped around his neck. The drs worked quick to unwrap it. When he was finally out, the drs. Put him on my chest while daddy cut the cord. At this point, he was starting to cry all on his own. The drs took him, cleaned him a bit and handed him to us for a quick picture. Then they whisked him off to the NICU. Dad got to go with him but I had to stay and get all fixed up. I had a small tear. Trenton Lee was born at 31 weeks and 2 days at 3:10 am weighing 4 lbs 4 ozs, 18 inches long, and breathing all on his own. He was born with low blood sugar due to me being on an insulin drip due to my diabetes. While in the NICU, he had to be treated for jaundice under the blue lights, and required a feeding tube. He continued to breathe on his own. After 2 weeks of Iowa city NICU they felt confident that he was doing well enough to be transferred to a hospital closer to home. So at 2 weeks, he moved to a closer NICU. While in that NICU he began to eat from a bottle, and continued to thrive. He was released to come home on the first Wednesday of this month, after only a 3 1/2 week NICU stay. He is home now and continues to thrive! He is a rainbow baby and he is so much a little miracle. The doctors were all super impressed with how well he has done, and have called him a super champ! He has no serious health complications from prematurity at this moment. He is for sure my hero!

Here he is shortly after birth

Here he is now. So proud of this little man!
