IS THIS LEGAL???!! UPDATE

Question

So I just started working at a restaurant. It’s a pretty common one idk if I’m allowed to say the name and complain while I’m working there’s so I’m just not going to. Basically it was not made clear to me that I would be getting so little pay. I just want to know if this is legal. I MADE $20 IN 11 HOURS. I’m still training as a part time busser because I have a kid and another job. But is it legal to make $20 with 11 hours worth of work. No tips or anything????

In New Zealand minimum wage is $20 a hour so in a 11 hours you would make $220.. under 16 can get paid less, over 18 you have to be paid minimum wage. I’m so thankful we live in such a good country with 95% free medical and decent minimum wage amount!

Normally when you work in a restaurant, either they have a deal where the bussers and the waitresses and waiters split their tips, or you have to work your way up to a waitress. For a lot of places waiters and waitresses work off the books and rely solely on their tips and the restaurant pays them a minimum of like $2.75 an hour or something like that. Because most of them receive tips that’s why it how they get around it especially with taxes. Unfortunately until you start making tips, this is what they pay if you don’t like it then you need to change jobs. Normally bus boys still usually don’t get tips the waiters and waitresses do some places have a deal where they all split their tips at the end of the night etc. Unfortunately this is how restaurants work. Until you become a waitress or waiter yourself, the pay sucks unless you can work out something else with the servers on your shift￼

If you are a tipped employee, tips are included in your hourly wage. 
The state I live in has a tipped minimum wage of $4.26, was $2.13 but was raised a few years ago. The regular minimum (from at least 5 years and) was around $7.50. So as long as I make enough tips that my average hourly wage is at least $7.50, it is legal. That average was based on the work week, not by day. So I could be under one day but way over the next week. The restaurant I worked at would not give the bussers and hosts their tips until the next day because of the end of day paper work and they finished their shift before the servers and kitchen staff. Legally you have to make at least the federal minimum wage. However, if the place is a small business their minimum can be lower. Also, the state minimum can be difficult than the federal minimum wage.

Didn’t they tell you what your make per hour as a server? Severs make very little money, and rely on tips. Other fees are taken from your check like taxes, social security, etc.

$2.75 and hour !!!! I don’t know why peoelmthink America is so great with awful wages and horrible medical costs. I’m in Canada and I’m pretty sure minimum wage is $15 .. I make $23 so I can’t really remember but $2.75 is like unimaginable to me. Like how do ppl live.
