Does “no” work with your baby?

Question

My 13-month old has really been testing my patience. He seems to understand “no”-I have even seen him cry if someone says it a bit sharply or loudly. That being said, If I am the one saying it, he laughs, and then continues doing what he is doing that he shouldn’t be. I have tried saying it softly, loudly, kindly, meanly, with different facial expressions-nothing seems to work! Does your baby understand “no” and do they take you seriously? Anyone have any insight or advice?!

Oh mine gets it. And thinks it’s funny. I call him my adrenaline junky. I try to teach my kids there’s a difference between being wild and being dangerous. My 4 year old was/is soooo cautious. My 1 year old. Lives on the edge. Of everything. Literally. And saying no gets him all excited about what he’s doing. 😑 I’m in for It I think. He was such an angel baby.  I bragged.

I say “stop” and then explain why he should stop. So for example, when it was hot he wanted to play with the fan, so I would say “Stop, if you put your fingers in it will hurt (sound effect). I also, model what I’m saying. Sure, it doesn’t work al the time, but I do stay consistent, so he’ll listen most of the time.

She understand NO but STOP works better for us. We don’t yell it but just say it normally and she will stop and turn around or just sit down.

My daughter was doing this a lot for a while. We don’t have everything baby proofed just let her know what cabinets she can’t get into. I researched how using the phrase “that is a no” helps them understand better. I never liked the idea of shouting no or no no no because I didn’t want her repeated back to us haha. It took a while but anytime she started to touch something she shouldn’t I would say the phrase and then immediately take her somewhere she could play with and it has helped a lot. Now she has started to listen to the phrase much better and stop without us having to move her

She knows what no means but she responds back “stop” when I tell her no💆🏻‍♀️ she gets upset

We say “no, no, no” and do the baby sign for it. My daughter calls herself out saying “no, no, no” and doing the sign for no and doing whatever she is doing anyways. We have now started timeouts. One minute in the playpen. She climbs onto our coffee table and knows it is a no-no so it’s fine for us to start (small) consequences.

Mine sometimes listens, other times he laughs at me. This is how I know he knows what I mean lol. I don’t know why, but I find shaking my head while saying no means more to him. So if I say no to something he’s doing and he ignores me I say his name and when he looks at me I say no again and shake my head. Sometimes he cries because he knows he can’t keep doing whatever he’s doing, but I know he’s just testing me.
