How much should the public be entitled to know about a political candidate / person in power?

Should we have total transparency or should they be entitled to complete privacy?
For example, when I am think about Clinton’s affair, why does it really matter? Does it affect his ability to do his job? Or is it relevant because it’s a reflection of his character?  
Would you reconsider voting for someone because they have a history of cheating on their spouses? Or other things they have done in their private life?

To be fair though, given that Monica was Clinton’s employee, what he did is no different than what a bunch of sleazy guys lost their jobs for with MeToo. What I’m saying it would have been a fireable offense regardless of the fact that he was President. If anything the President should be held to a higher, not a lower standard, than Harvey Weinstein and Roger Ailes.

I would have been fired for sleeping with my employee. The President shouldnt be held to a lower standard than your average Joe. 
And it is important as a character. If hes willing to lie, cheat, and violate the trust of his family, why wouldnt he do it to people he doesnt actually know or care about? 
Actions that speak to a persons character are important. Betraying your family says a lot about you. How many times a week you eat McDonald's or KFC is not an important character trait.

Clinton had an affair with an employee. He was her superior and he used his position of power over her. That’s going to get pretty much anyone fired, no matter what your job is. So that’s a different example. If the affair was with someone unrelated to politics, then sure it might be okay to keep quiet. But the media allows everyone to find out everyone’s personal business anyways. It’s just the way things work nowadays. I personally don’t think I’m entitled to know EVERYTHING about the President. But as long as it’s relevant to his job, then I would like to know.

A huge part of the problem with Bill Clinton's affair with Monica Lewinsky is that it took place while he was in office as the most powerful man in the world at the time. He was also significantly older than her. The power differential was vast. Also, for anyone who wished to pay attention back then, it was already known that Clinton was a sexual predator. It was known that when he was governor of Arkansas, he used the state police to cover up his misdeeds. He was and remains a horrible person who was, and possibly still is, willing to go to extreme lengths to cover up his crimes - yes, crimes. Everybody who wanted to know back when Jeffrey Epstein was first making news about his sexual proclivities (years ago), that Bill Clinton was a frequent flyer on the so-called Lolita Express. My husband lived in New York during Clinton's presidency and it was common knowledge. To minimize everything he did down to a little affair with an aide is misleading and ignores the much larger crimes he committed. This is also a man who believed that to be a great president required presiding over a war, so basically killing people to burnish his presidential legacy. That is gross. I was 12 when he became president and 20 when his second term ended. I followed the news pretty closely through a lot of it and I can honestly say that I would never in a million years have voted for Clinton. He has not even one tiny shred of moral fibre.
All of that to say, it is important how a person treats their spouse. If they cannot manage themselves and their own household, how will they effectively manage an entire nation? Nobody in their right mind, including me, wants to sweep Trump's sexual misdeeds under the carpet, so we shouldn't retroactively do it for Bill Clinton. Both men are vile and neither were fit for the presidency, in my opinion. Character matters and if a person puts their hand up and says, "Yes, I can lead this country and yes, I am qualified to be the leader of the free world," then quite frankly, their life should be under a microscope.

Personally I think no. It’s just like a normal person like us going to work. Essentially, does your personal life make or break your job. No what you do outside your job is your business, but you also are the face of the company. Although our jobs are not as powerful as the presidents so i can understand if people would want to know!

When you take a position with that much power and responsibility, you lose privacy. That’s the sacrifice you have to be willing to make to be in charge. Look at actors/singers and so on. They have a constant stream of paparazzi. They accept it for the life they want to live in the spotlight. 
If you’re caught engaging in sexual activities with a subordinate, it’s generally inappropriate, regardless of if you’re/they’re married or not, because there’s a coercion aspect. It also speaks volumes of your character. As the president? You have the power to bury things that no one else can. It’s extra risky to put someone immoral in such a high position.

I’m less interested in their personal life and more interested in their professional life... the exception with Clinton was his affair being tied to his presidency and the fact that his position influenced the affair. Honestly, if a president has an affair prior to their time in office I don’t see it as a dealbreaker on my vote if we otherwise align because that’s between them and their partner. It doesn’t mean I think that would make them a good person, but it doesn’t disqualify them for me.
As far as other things go, I think the public has a right to know if any laws were broken, or of any unethical investments the person has.. if it’s strictly relational scandal I don’t think it should matter in general

From an outside perspective American politics is honestly just so dramatic. The personal life of a candidate should not matter unless they are involved in criminal or highly unethical things. Its about what they can do for the country, not how many wifes/ husbands they have had etc. 
I could not even tell you what Angela Merkels husband even looks like, because never have I heared a speech from her and thought huh, tjis sounds interessting, but befor I vote for her party I want to know if she has ever cheated on her husband... simply because there is no overlap with these two aspects.
