Short-term disability after birth

Ba
Bayleigh

My work does not offer maternity leave but offers the FMLA, which is 12 weeks of unpaid leave. I was told to sign up for Short-term disability to collect a portion of my salary on a weekly basis. After looking into it, it seems like I will only get two weeks paid from short term disability.

I don’t know if I’m reading this wrong and would love to hear from other moms who had to use short term disability.

Any advice would help!

If you’re already pregnant, read the fine print before paying in. Many disability companies will not pay out. I signed up before I got pregnant. Haven’t used it yet, so I can’t help otherwise.

I have short term disability. I had to work at my company for a year to be eligible and I had to enroll prior to becoming pregnant. It covers up to 12 weeks of time off with 60% of my pay. My company also allows me to use any sick and/or vacation time to supplement the other 40%. I have enough time so I will get a full paycheck for the 12 weeks that I am off.

Many factors to this one. Which state are you in? They all seem to have different standards and requirements.

My policy also wouldn't cover it unless I signed up at least 60 days prior to pregnancy diagnosis. It also only covers the MEDICAL part of your leave, which is 6 weeks vaginal birth, 8 weeks c section, minus their grace period which is usually 10-14 days (eg the first days of your leave is not covered) and it only covered about 60% of my salary.

Short term disability is in our benefits. I haven’t taken it yet. My work won’t let me apply for fmla or anything until about 30 days before my due date. Other people I work with got 6 weeks of the fmla paid because of the short term disability.

It had been my experience that you have to have been signed up before pregnancy. I don’t think you can get it if you already are. That being said, it definitely wasn’t worth it for me. I had been paying for it for a few years “just in case” I got pregnant and actually lost money. (Paid in more than the benefit I received).
